As the first round of the SuperCoach AFL season is behind us, many coaches are considering trades and plans for the future weeks. This is all the more pivotal when considering when and how we use these trades, especially as cash cows and injuries bob up.
Massimo D’Ambrosio $224k
The Hawks recruit excelled in his debut match as he rebounded and brought life to a new Hawthorn attack. D’Ambrosio led his team for disposals (29 at 72% DE) with 15 kicks and 14 handballs, as well as 4 marks with 82% ToG, leading to a score of 122 SC. While the likes of Jiath are recovering from injury, D’Ambrosio should be a key contributor to the Hawks rebounding defence and be a main source of distribution across half-back. If you accompany the injuries to popular rookie defenders, such as Gibcus and Reid, D’Ambrosio seems set to be a solid point scorer and cash generator to target.
Jack Billings $243k
Billings had most fooled after opening round, as the Dees named him as the sub and scored a mere 11 SC. This quickly flipped on its head, as he made it into the Dees best 22 and amassed 119 SC points against the Dogs. The bulk of his score came from kicks, as he managed 20 kicks from his total of 23 disposals, alongside 15 marks for the match. Billings is also on the bubble this week due to appearing in opening round, meaning that this is the week to jump on.
Thomas Berry $163k
After producing scores of 62 and 104 SC, Berry is firming as a popular trade target heading into round 2. He has managed these scores with only one goal to his name to start the season, as he has mainly drawn points through tackles (3 in RD zero and 7 in RD one) and a half forward/wing role. Similarly to Billings, Berry played in opening round and his price will rise a week earlier as a result. Despite having a price tag of $163k, his breakeven is -75, making it the lowest amongst all FWDs.
Caleb Serong $621k
After accumulating a club record disposal count (46), Serong is capturing the attention of the entire SC competition. After already receiving praise for his stellar off-season, Serong backed it up with a game high 170 SC against the Lions. He seems set to take over the reigns as the Dockers leading CBA mid, with 85% on the weekend (second to Jackson with 89%). With a 170 score and North Melbourne as his upcoming matchup, Serong should start the season well and build early cash.
Isaac Heeney $483k
Heeney impressed after another strong performance in the midfield, producing a score of 136 SC against the reigning premiers, Collingwood. His CBA numbers have risen to a 62% average, along with 26 and 29 disposals across the first two rounds, pushing his SC average to 140. While the evident return of Taylor Adams and Callum Mills beckons, Heeney is still a strong option for the short term and could allow for a sideways trade to another forward premium. Considering his performances thus far, Heeney could still hold his midfield role and continue his scoring streak for the foreseeable future.
Blake Howes $123k
With defender rookies struggling, Howes has been impressive in his first two senior games, managing scores of 91 and 64 SC. He has collected 17 and 16 disposals, 7 marks and 80%+ disposal efficiency in each of his first two appearances for the Dees. His price is projected to rise $80k if he produces two scores in the 40’s across the next two rounds, making him arguably the best defensive cash cow to trade in this round. If you accompany the injuries of Gibcus and Reid, Howes is a no-brainer if you don’t own him.
I thank you all again for reading and best of luck heading into Round 2 of the 2024 AFL SuperCoach season. Don't forget that the Lineball open league is still open to join, the code is 978256.
